About Sonoran AI

A Service Guy Who Found AI

My name is Steven Shumaker. I run Sonoran AI out of Chandler, Arizona. It is one person, and that person is me — which is either the reason to hire us or the reason not to, and I would rather you decide that with the facts in front of you.

Most People Build This From the Software Side

They read that home service contractors miss a lot of calls, recognised a market, and started writing code. Nothing wrong with that. It is just a very different starting point from mine.

I spent more than twenty years in the service industry — fine dining, fast casual, and two small businesses of my own. I have been the person who missed the call. I know what it costs, because I have paid it, out of my own pocket, on a Saturday.

Fine Dining Teaches One Specific Skill

And it is not carrying plates. It is reading a table. Knowing what somebody needs before they ask for it, and handling it so smoothly they never notice the machinery working behind them. Fast casual teaches the other half of the job: volume, speed, and getting it right the first time because there is no time to do it twice.

That is where I get my work ethic, and my ability to talk to anybody about anything.

It is also, almost exactly, what I now build for contractors. An agent that answers at nine at night, asks the right questions and puts the appointment on your calendar is doing the same job a good host does. The customer simply feels looked after. They never see the mechanism. That is the standard I hold these systems to, and it comes straight off a restaurant floor.

Two Businesses in Pensacola

Before we moved to Chandler, I owned and operated two small businesses in Pensacola, Florida.

My wife Annette designed every piece. I ran everything else — packaging, shipping, accounting, order fulfillment, and hauling it all to market.

Every Saturday at the market in downtown Pensacola, handing cold treats to people walking past in the Florida heat.

Owner-operator on both, which in a two-person business means you are also the shipping department, the bookkeeper and the guy loading the truck at dawn. Nobody hands a small business owner a job description. You do whatever did not get done yesterday.

The snow cone stand sounds like a footnote on a business page. It is not. Standing at a market stall every Saturday teaches you something a software company never learns: exactly what it means when a customer walks up ready to buy and there is nobody there to serve them.

That is the entire problem I work on now. I used to solve it by being there at seven in the morning, setting up in the heat. These days I solve it for contractors who cannot be in two places at once.

The Gap Is the Business

I have a business degree and a data analytics certificate. The second one matters more here than the first. I would rather measure what a system actually does than tell you it works — it is why our pricing sits on a public page instead of behind a discovery call, and why the first thing we do on a demo is count your missed calls rather than show you a slide deck.

I have been working with these AI tools since they became available to ordinary people. Not as a hobbyist collecting demos — because I kept noticing the same thing. The distance between what these tools can genuinely do and what small businesses actually use them for is enormous, and almost nobody is closing it for contractors.

That gap is the business. I am not selling you software. I am building the thing I would want if I still had a stall to run.

Chandler Is Home, and That Is Deliberate

Annette and I moved here with our two young daughters, and this is home now. That is part of why the service area ends where it does.

I work with luxury contractors in Chandler, Gilbert, Queen Creek, Mesa, Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, and nowhere else. Not because the work would not travel — because knowing a market properly is the difference between an agent that sounds local and one that sounds like a call center. I know which communities run architectural review before you can pour concrete. I know why a Queen Creek backyard is still dirt and a Paradise Valley one is a rebuild. That knowledge goes into every agent I build, and it does not survive being stretched across a country.

It also means that if something goes sideways on a Saturday, the person you are calling lives about twenty minutes away.

One Person, On Purpose

When you hire Sonoran AI, you get me. Not an account manager, not a support queue, not a script somebody else wrote in another state and sold to forty companies.

You approve every word your agents say before they say it. You keep the phone number your customers already know. And it is month to month — cancel with fourteen days' written notice — because I would rather lose a client than hold one hostage to a contract.

Reachable beats best. The job goes to the builder who answered. I built this company on that idea because I spent twenty years watching it be true, from behind a counter, a bar, and a folding table at a farmers market.
